Replay: Barry Bernson's "A History of Kentucky in 25 Objects" is available on the web.

Barry Bernson knows how to tell a story - and in his recent KET documentary, he uses 25 artifacts to trace the history of Kentucky.  If you haven't caught the broadcasts, the program repeats through February on KET outlets, but it's also available streaming on the web.

Hound of the Buskervilles contributed a snippet of song for object 13.

And in case you're wondering: NO! Object 13 is not a bilge pump!  That's object 14.

Object 13 is a copper kettle used for making whiskey.

Here's a link to the documentary:

Buskervilles at the Coalition for the Homeless Give-A-Jam benefit.

Writer-photographer Matt Herp, of the Courier-Journal, assembled a nice piece and photo gallery about last week's Coalition for the Homeless Give-A-Jam benefit. This year's Give-A-Jam partnered with RX: Housing Veterans, which focuses on trying to bring an end to Veteran homelessness - an excellent cause, indeed.

We were delighted to be on a lineup that included a number of good friends.

Louisville troubadour John Gage opened the show.

Natalie Harris, Executive Director of the Coalition for the Homeless, received a "Compassionate Laureate" award from Jud Hendrix.

Matt caught some nice shots of Louisville jazz man Dick Sisto, who channeled some Bill Evans for us.

The event was sold out -

thanks in no small part to Tim O'Brien, who played private concert before the main event

and returned to the big stage for a fine second set.

And on a chilly December night a number of area restaurants, including Rye, El Camino, and Irish Rover, supported the cause with hot soups.

Hound of the Buskervilles Makes History (sort of)

Hound of the Buskervilles makes history!
Well, actually it's our friend, the estimable journalist, storyteller and documentarian Barry G Bernson, who is making history.

But he gave us a bit part - we sing a little song about a "Copper Kettle."
Be sure to watch Barry's new documentary, "A History of Kentucky in 25 Objects," when it airs on KET December 15 and 21. Set your DVR!

Coming Up: Give-A-Jam to Prevent Homelessness at The Clifton Center, benefiting the Coalition for the Homeless.

The Give-A-Jam benefits the  Coalition for the Homeless.  This year's event focuses on Ending Veteran Homelessness.

From the Give-A-Jam Facebook Page:
In its first three years, the Give-A-Jam to End Homelessness has raised more than $43,000 in support of the Coalition for the Homeless’ efforts to eliminate homelessness in our community. On Thursday, December 18, 2014 we’ll do it again with the goal of raising $15,000 more, and you can help!
This year, Rx: Housing will be focusing on Ending Veteran Homeless in Louisville. Mayor Fischer signed the Mayor’s Challenge to End Veteran Homeless earlier this year and groups have been meeting to coordinate, prioritize and access resources to make it happen. Partners include Family Health Centers, the Robley Rex Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), Volunteers of America, Louisville Metro Housing Authority and you by buying this ticket today.

Other details below:

Again, from the Give-A-Jam Facebook page:
The Give-A-Jam is becoming a holiday tradition in Louisville. Once again, some of our city’s leading musicians, chefs, artists, and others will come together to raise money in support of the Coalition for the Homeless’ efforts.
We’ll have ten bands and soups and stews from some of Louisville’s leading restaurants. Tickets are only $20 ($25 with a t-shirt) and includes admission to the show and $10 in food and drink tickets.

Also this year, we have a special opportunity to be one of only 75 people to enjoy a private performance on stage of the Eifler Theatre with the legendary Grammy-winning bluegrass musician, Tim O’Brien.

The Give-A-Jam is all about celebrating the fact that everyone can do something to help. Musicians and chefs will donate their talents at the event. Sound engineers will give their time, printers will print and designers will design, all in support of our goal to help people who need it the most. So what can YOU do?

"The Emperor is Naked Today-O," by Pete Seeger.

Dan and Marty cover Pete Seeger's "The Emperor Is Naked Today-O" (aka "As The Sun") at the "For Pete's Sake" tribute concert (Bellarmine University, 10/26/2014).

This song, written circa 1970, was recorded on Pete's 1979 album "Circles & Seasons." He recorded another version in 2007 for an Appleseeds compilation album called "Sowing the Seeds - the 10th Anniversary."

Is it a gathering, a shindig, a hootenanny, or a flootenanny?

Flootenanny, noun.
Pronunciation: /fluːt(ə)nænɪ/
1. Crowd-sourced musical chaos with Hound of the Buskervilles and The Survival of the Flootest Disharmonic Orchestra.
2. An unpredictable spontaneous instrumental combustion event known to occur when Flutophones and Slide Whistles are found in close proximity to children and inebriated adults.

For more information about gatherings, shindigs, hootenannies, and Flootenannies, please follow this link (on some browsers, you may need to fast forward to the 20:38 mark).

A whole mess of Floot and a little bit of nanny....

Will there be a Flootenanny this Sunday at Clifton's Pizza?  It's impossible to say.  But Hound of the Buskervilles will be there.

Clifton's Pizza Company, Sunday November 30, 6:30-9:30.

"Wyoming Wind," by Mark Erelli.

Click here if you're listening on a mobile device!

Mark Erelli is as versatile and interesting a singer-songwriter as you could ever hope to encounter.

His contributions to the Darwin Song Project were superb.  In fact, the entire album, which features several great writers, deserves your attention. If you're not familiar with it, there's a description on wikipedia, and it's available via Mark's website or from various vendors.

Erelli's most recent album, Milltowns, is a tribute to the late, great Bill Morrissey.

In addition to those projects, Erelli has released 10 or so other albums.

This song, "Wyoming Wind," comes from his 2010 album Seven Curses, a duo recording with Jeffrey Foucault.

Dan and and Marty are once again playing at The Rudyard Kipling brunch while Phil and Eddie sleep in. Lucky Hounds, they!

"Whenever It Snows." Buskervilles and brunch at The Rudyard Kipling.

Hound of the Buskervilles will NOT be at Sol Aztecas this Friday, but our friend Mickey Clark will be!

Hound of the Buskervilles is switching dates with our friend the excellent singer-songwriter Mickey Clark.

This Friday, November 14, Mickey & The Blue Norther with special guest Michael Cleveland on fiddle, will give you more music than you can handle.

First they play WFPK's Live Lunch at noon (91.9 FM).  Then they'll move on to Sol Aztecas for night of music.  It should be a great night.  We've played Sol Aztecas a number of times.  The acoustics are very clean. The seating is comfortable. Service is friendly. The only problem is that it's pretty tough for a musician to stay focused when somebody carries a sizzling platter of fajitas right in front of you!

Hound of the Buskervilles will be at Sol Aztecas the following Friday, November 21.

Sol Aztecas is at 5612 Bardstown Road.  The music starts at 6:30 and runs until 9:30.

The Buskervilles Groove

A prime example of the Buskervilles Groove.

Dan Boone, mandolin. Eddie Hysinger, harp.  Phil Ragland, guitar.

Unknown pilot, flyover.

Buskervilles Brunch at The Rudyard Kipling

Start your Sunday with biscuits and gravy and a Buskervilles Groove.

While the other Hounds sleep in, Dan and Marty will be hanging out at the omelet station, nibbling on smoked fish, scarfing down desserts imported from Nord's bakery, and sipping spicy Bloody Marys.

And if we all those other activities don't get in the way, we'll also play some music.  From 10-2.

The Rudyard Kipling has been in new hands since early this year.  Amy and William Enix, formerly of That Place on Goss (where they introduced their famous Sunday brunch buffet) have renovated and refurbished the space. They've rejuvenated the kitchen. And basically they've restored the Rud to where Ken and Sheila Pyle had it in its prime.

Here's a shot of the interior:

I wrote about the Rud in May (before I resigned from the dining beat at the Courier-Journal).  Here's the story: http://www.courier-journal.com/story/entertainment/dining/restaurant/2014/05/21/rudyard-revival/9383239/

Do join us. The Rudyard Kipling is at 422 W. Oak Street.
