Friday is the Eve of All Hallows Eve, and Frankfort Avenue will be hopping from one end to the other.

Here are three scary good reasons to find your way to The Wine Rack (2632 Frankfort Avenue).

1. The folks from Schlafly St. Louis Brewery will be on hand with samples of various brews.

2. Our friends at Kenny's Farmhouse Cheese will also be on hand with delectable offerings.

3. Hound of the Buskervilles (all four of us, Dan, Phil, Eddie, and Marty) will be in the courtyard, playing music on what is projected to be a superb October night.

Join us for a sip, a nibble, and a listen (the music starts at six, and will continue until 8:30 or 9).

Don't Fight the Powers that Be Busking!

Hound of the Buskervilles (three of us, that is, Phil, Eddie, and Marty) arose early one morning to talk about Kentucky Music Weekend and play some music on WHAS-TV's morning program, Great Day Live.  Click to hear us talk (just a bit) and play. Oh, there are two links.  First we play our song about mountain songs, " Bitter Angels," then we pay tribute to Stephen Foster with "American Hotel," Carl Brouse's song about Foster's final hours, in a New York City hotel.

Busking under the Stars: Saturday at the Barret Bar

The Patio at the Barret Bar & Grill is a brick-lined haven that's among the city's most comfortable outdoor music venues - the perfect place to settle back with a brew, some great pub food (Klaus's Pretzel Bread, house-smoked meats, great sandwiches), and the intricate acoustic sound of Hound of the Buskervilles.

The Saturday night forecast calls for perfect busking weather under a crescent moon. The music starts at 9 pm (a few minutes after sundown) and runs until midnight.

Please join Phil, Eddie, Dan and Marty for a special night!

Start your Derby Day with Berries and Buskervilles (and pick up some tomato plants, while you're at it).

The spring harvest continues at the Bardstown Road Farmers' Market.

Strawberry, rhubarb, asparagus, tender greens, fiery peppers. and plenty more offerings are on hand.

And if you follow the local practice of putting out your tomato plants on Derby Day, you'll find a big assortment of locally started plants - popular and heirloom varieties - on hand.

And, yes, √Buskervilles will be on hand playing an eclectic mix of folk music from 8 am to noon (1722 Bardstown Road).

Because it's timely - and worth repeating - here is Thomas Merton's celebration of a spring day:
The City's Spring

Though jealous March, in marble skies
Prisoned our April Saturdays,
This air is full of courtesies.

The walls, that wept with arrowy rain,
Turn a new presence to the sun.
Flowers and friendly days are in.

The bended lanes are loud with cries,
And are become our Italies,

And bring sweet songs and strawberries.

Though jealous March, in marble skies
Prisoned our April Saturdays,
This air is full of courtesies.

The walls, that wept with arrowy rain,
Turn a new presence to the sun.
Flowers and friendly days are in.

The bended lanes are loud with cries,
And are become our Italies,
And bring sweet songs and strawberries.
